After a month lay-off, the boys returned to play at Bear Creek in Chandler in the Hamilton Invitational. A 2-day, 36 hole event where the Aztecs played well. They are close to a bid to winning the Super Regional however were unable to secure it this week as they posted a +7 on the qualifying side. They have 1 more event to bring that home. They have already punched their ticket to state, this would be icing on the cake. On the event itself, they hung close to the heavily-favored Hamilton and finished 2nd in a strong field.
Notables: Nick Morrow finished 3rd with a (+1) and Jordan Turner finished T5 with a (+7)
This has to be one of my personal favorites places the team plays. Such a gorgeous golf course in South-Central Phoenix. A nice 83 degree, overcast day - the scene was simply surreal. The boys put up a good show with a first place finish. The team, currently in 4th, sits nicely for their first State bid in 3 years.
Notables: Nick Morrow medaled the event with a great (-2) 34. Jordan Turner finished 3rd (+1) and Alex Seibal finished 4th (+2).
The 3rd major tournament of the year and Encanterra Golf Club; 2-day event. Day 1 - The team shot (+28) as a team; a rather rough day particularly the front side (+23) where this would be the qualifying side on the 2nd day. At the end of the day, the Aztecs were in 4th place. They really needed to turn it around the next day and boy did they come back with a bang. This is movie material. Day -2 the team got off to a shaky start but rallied the 2nd half of the qualifying side to post a School best (+2). Wow, it was so fun to watch. The team carried on and shot (+6) for 18 holes as a team (another school PR). This is the best overall performance I have seen by the team since I've been watching. They really need an outing like this to boost their IWR score, their confidence, and overall prove they belong. They finished 2nd place, gaining over 6 strokes from the day before on the field.
Notables: 2 Aztec players finished in the Top 10; Nick Morrow 5th (+1) and Jordan Turner T8 (+6).
A solid match at a challenging course posting a +10 and getting the win. The team is looking good for a state bid at this time but nothing is guaranteed. They need 1 or 2 really good showings to secure their spot.
Notables: 4 of 5 players finished in the Top 5. Nick Morrow and Brody Leid finished T1 (+2). Alex Seibal and Jordan Turner finished T3 (+3).
Interesting tournament this was as it mirrored the Ryder cup style with all Varsity boys playing in this event against Red Mountain. Day 1 was at Longbow with a qualifying side and single point stroke play. On the stroke play side, the Aztecs ended 4-4 split. The Aztecs posted a +14 on the qualifying side; not their worse showing but hoped to have done better. Fortunately it was a tough course and the IWR score is +6. Day 2 was in Tucson at Omni Catalina 4 ball format. The teams split this as well - go figure.
Notables: On the individual side of the house, Alex Seibal T1 and Nick Morrow 3rd both had Top 5 finishes.
The 2nd home match of the year. The Aztecs were rather disappointed in this showing given it's their home course however they still managed a good score of (+6).
Notables: Nick Morrow T1 (-1) and Alex Seibal T3 (E) garnered Top 5 finishes. This is Nick's 3rd 1st place finish of the year. Tyler Weihe made is Varsity debut and shot a solid (+3).
Now that's the way to comeback following their 9/10 lack-luster performance. A Corona Del Sol best Even par (0) as a team. That is by far the best performance as a team I have seen in over 4 years. Hopefully a nice confidence booster leading up to the Rivalry Cup on 9/17.
Notables: Alex Seibal medaled in the event finishing T1 with a PR (-2). Nick Morrow was also close behind at T4 (-1). Jordan Turner (+1) and Brody Leid (+2) finished in the top 10. Brodie Leid's 38 and Alex Seibal's 34 were both season bests for these 2.
The 2nd full tournament of the year. Rather hohum event as all the Aztec players struggled a bit and were not at their best. Coach wasn't happy either. None the less, still a 4th place finish and the Aztecs are currently ranked 6th in the State; well positioned for a Tucson invite.
Usually the Aztecs do not play very well at their home course. Kudos to coach for mixing up their practice sessions as to not play KennyMac so much. A solid win here and tieing a season's match-best outing of (+5).
Notables: All 5 players finished in the top 6 of the event. Tyler Weihe made his Season debut a smash firing a solid (+3) for a T4 finish along with Brodie Leid. Nick Morrow finished T1 with a nice (-1), Jordan Turner cruised to an even par (0) T3 finish, and Alex Seibal finished 6th with a (+6).
Match 3 vs. Thunderbird and Pinnacle. What a wonderful course this is. Pretty tight and well manicured. The team secured a 1st place finish with a (+11) score, a solid outing on a PLUS course.
Notables: 4 Aztec players finished in the top 5. Jordan Turner and Alex Seibal finished T1 with a score of (+1). Nick Morrow posted a (+4) to finish 4th solo and Brodie Leid posted (+5) to finish T5.
Match 2 vs. Desert Mountain and Moutain View. Play on this course was already to be difficult with the +2 course rating. Coupled with the weather, it made for a grueling day for the Aztecs. With howling winds and rain, the Aztecs got the win, but I know the team was disappointed in their play. They'll turn it around.
Notables: Aztecs had 3 players finish in the Top 5 - Nick Morrow 2nd (+1), Jordan Turner and Brodie Leid T3 (+6)
The first full tournament of the year featuring 15+ schools. A solid 2nd place finish for the Aztecs. The first day they posted a historic team record +4 and were in prime position to take the 1st place spot, not to be however, as they cooled down on the 2nd day. They did show up when it mattered for State points on the back nine of the 2nd day posting a solid +3.
Notables: Aztecs had 2 players place in the top 10 - Nick Morrow T2 (-1) and Alex Seibal T8 (E). Single day team record +4 on the first day.
We are greatly excited about this season as this team is poised to make a solid run at State. Possibly the best team CDS has seen in a few years and the first match was nothing short of spectacular. Teeing it up at Grand Canyon University, the team got the match win with 3 CDS golfers finishing in the Top 5 and a team score of +5. That score is the best this team has put up in over 2 years.
Notables: Jordan Turner T2 (E), Nick Morrow and Alex Seibal T4 (+1) all finished in the top 5.

Overall the Aztecs had a great season. Following last year's departure of some of the best golfers this team has had, the Aztecs had 5 new incoming players. The team had 3 individuals qualify for state and it is rare that a team has 3 qualifiers and the team does not qualify. This is a testament to the depth and talent we saw on the course this year throughout the state. Congratulations to the team on a great season and to Nick Morrow, Alex Seibal, and Jordan Turner for excellent sportsmanship and showings at the State event.
Notables: All 3 players showed glimpses of greatness on one of the hardest courses in the state. Nick Morrow finished T14 with a +4 posting scores of 75 and 69. Jordan Turner posted a solid 73 on the first day. In addition, the team was -3 on hole #15 (pictured) which features a long par 5 up a 35 degree incline to a blind 2nd shot. The picture does not show the grueling walk this hole requires up that hill.
This was the last scheduled event of the year prior to state and the team finished 6th place. It was a solid outing for the boys but fell short as a team to get into the state championship. What a great season these boys put together this year definitely turning some heads. The team did have 3 individuals qualify for the state event who begin competing this week on 10/28: Nick Morrow, Alex Seibal, and Jordan Turner.
Notables: Nick Morrow posted a single day PR shooting a (-5) 67 and also posted a 2-day PR (-5). Nick Morrow also posted the team's season-best ranking as an individual in a tournament (5th place).
Match #9 vs. Saguaro & McClintock (D2). A decent showing on a +2 course (this means each score gets a 2 strokes subtracted from their score in the IWR rankings). No movement on the state invite front - the team is still sitting in 14th place. They will need a great showing in the next tournament and some help from other teams. The good news is they will know exactly what they need to get in.
Notables: Jordan Turner finished T1 in the event with (+2), his second first place of the season. Caden Griffin posted a solid (+6) in his match debut. Nick Morrow, Alex Seibal, and Jordan Turner are currently qualified as individuals for the state tournament.
Match #8 vs. Casteel & Notre Dame Prep - both excellent teams and a great opportunity for the Aztecs to move up in the state rankings playing at their home course. Solid finish however the (+7) as a team wasn't enough to secure a state invite; 2 opportunities remain in the season to get in.
Notables: Nick Morrow (-3) & Brody Leid (+2) posted personal bests in match play.
This was the 2nd tournament of the year featuring the best teams in the state. All the big boys were here. Was a great opportunity to showcase the Aztecs. The team finished 17th of 23 schools. Not a great team showing however we had numerous PRs during the event. They still have a few opportunities to get into the top 12.
Notables: Nick Morrow (+3), Jordan Turner (+8), Alex Seibal (+19), and Brody Leid (+24). all shot 2-day tournament PRs. In addition, Jordan Turner (-1) & Brody Leid (+7) shot single-round tournament bests.
Match #7 vs. Paradise Valley. Another win for the Aztecs but another tough day on another course that plays over par. The team will need a strong showing in the next couple events to get back in the top 12 for State.
Notables: 3 Aztec players finished in the top 5 of the event.
Match #6 vs. Thunderbird and Pinnacle. The first of 3 outings in 4 days this week. Was a tough day for the Aztecs on a very difficult course; a victory none the less. This performance knocked the team out of the 12th spot for state however they have plenty of opportunities this week to make it up.
Notables: 3 Corona players shot +6 for T3 showings.
Match #5 vs. Dobson & Mountain Point. Tied their season best (+7) and this time it was good enough for 1st place, yeah it wasn't close, but you still have to play the game. Jordan Turner gets his first 1st place finish in match play following a clutch 2nd shot into the 9th green to leave himself 1' for the winning birdie.
Notables: Jordan Turner (-2) carded his 2nd consecutive personal best. Corona's top 4 players finished in the top 6 of the tournament.
Match #4 vs. Desert Vista & Queen Creek. Another season best +7 was not enough to overcome the play of the other schools. Still a great showing on an away course. This outing however did move the Aztecs into 12th place in the Arizona standings putting them on the invite list for the State tournament... for now at least :).
Notables: Alex Seibel (Even) and Jordan Turner (+1)shot personal bests.
Match #3 vs. Paradise Valley & Marcos De Niza. A solid 1st place finish for the Aztecs shooting a season best +8. Four Aztecs finished in the top 6 individually.
Notables: Brody Leid put up a season PR in match play with +4. There were no ties in the top 6 spots of this event and Aztecs finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th, & 6th.
Quest for State - The team currently sits 1 spot out of the coveted Top 12 invitees moving up after this outing into 13th place. Nick Morrow, Alex Seibal, and Jordan Turner are all currently qualified as individuals.
Match #2 vs. Desert Mountain & Mountain View (Mesa). A tough outing for the Aztecs, posting a +14 as a team. Still a 2nd place finish worth some points in their quest for a State invitation.
Notables: Nick Morrow finished T2 with an even score 36. Luke Stephens posted a personal match-play best of +4.
The first big tournament of the season, the Fall Preview, featured 14 teams from around the valley. The first true test to see where our young Aztec team fits among some of the top schools in the state. A solid 6th place finish turned some heads around the state that this team may surprise us yet.
Notables: Every Aztec player this week put up personal 2-day bests in high school tournament play.
8/25/2020 - Ken McDonald Golf Course
The season opener for the Corona Boys Golf Team - match play vs. Camp Verde & Red Mountain. A clutch birdie on #9 by Alex Seibal put the Aztecs within 1 stroke of the lead with the final group on the tee. Alas, it was not to be as both players in the last group made par for Corona and Red Mountain respectively. Solid 2nd place finish for this young group of Aztecs..
Notables: Alex Seibal and Nick Morrow both finished T1 individually with +1 while Jordan Turner finished at T4 with +2.
